It works for some and others aren’t a fan.
It took me years to appreciate the program as it is and to stop thinking it was cult-ish. I realized that it truly is a spiritual program and not that it won’t work if you don’t claim a higher power, but it definitely helps if you do. (I met a girl in rehab who said for right now her ice maker is her higher power because it can make ice and she can’t. Whatever works!)
Once I started growing my spiritual side I learned to appreciate what the program has to offer but I can’t find a proper sponsor who understands mental health. Bipolar, Borderline, agoraphobic, neurodivergent with sensory issues…I just don’t function like other people. I have a hard time doing repetitive things, like going to meetings regularly. I struggle most days to just take basic care of myself let alone adding in “chores”.
If you stumble across this and you work the program and have an understanding of the mental health side and how it’s the chemicals in my brain feeling or doing whatever, and not me on purpose. People have made me weary of having a sponsor…had one who told me that my diagnoses were an excuse to not work the program. I can assure you that’s not the case. But anyways, yeah, if you’re up for an unconventional sponsee, email me!
[NOT someone with the same diagnoses. In my experience it’s trouble]
Back to the meeting, it was great and it filled me up emotionally. I missed my church sermon yesterday so I’m about to turn it on so I can start my day completely filled.
Happy Monday to you all!
-Mike
